Social Science Research Centre
Hawkins\Brown was commissioned to provide a new research building on their Wivenhoe Campus in Colchester housing two research departments, the UK Data Archive and the Institute of Social and Economic Research.
The building consists largely of research offices and archive facilities and incorporates seminar and meeting facilities shared by both departments.
The site had a challenging topography and had to maintain a relationship with the main 1960s campus buildings, incorporating dual entrances and connections back into adjacent departments.
The building form responds to the landscape and contours of the exisitng site, its form and orientation maximising natural daylight and ventilation minimising solar gain and provides views across the mature landscape of the campus.
