Shephalbury Park School
Stevenage, Hertfordshire

In November 2006, Hawkins\Brown completed work at Shephalbury Park School in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The project was carried out in collaboration with MACE and Hertordshire County Council and the completed school forms part of Shephalbury Meadow, the first Joint School Federation in the country. The scheme involved the refurbishment of an existing single form of entry school and the construction of a new two classroom Foundation Stage Unit.
Architecturally, the design approach was to make sympathetic interventions to the site that were both practical and sensitive. The additions and modifications provide improved teaching accommodation combined with greater flexibility whilst respecting the ethos of the original buildings. Landscape interventions were also integrated as a key part of the design concept.
The new build Foundation Stage Unit comprises of two main teaching spaces that can be opened up to form a larger single space. Building Services are rationally located to a central block housing WC, shower and wet play areas. Both classrooms can be fully connected with the external environment and open on to an outdoor teaching area, sheltered from the elements via the canopy of the building.
The external play area is set within a landscape that aims to provide an inspiring environment for the youngest children, bearing scale, materials and the natural world in consideration in a school where outdoor learning is encouraged.
