Sustainable Design
Sustainability is about much more than green roofs and solar collectors. It is at the core of our design philosophy and forms the foundation of all our projects, ensuring that the architecture we deliver is sustainable from inception through to completion and beyond.
Hawkins\Brown has worked for over 20 years encouraging a sustainable approach and accessible attitude to architectural and societal issues such as economics, culture, politics, race, opportunity, planning, management and design. Our commitment to sustainability and environmental issues has been recognised in our ISO 14001:2004 certification.
Creating sustainable architecture also means creating buildings that are beautiful and popular, durable and easy to maintain, safe and accessible (physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually) and open and adaptable enough to accommodate future change.
As a practice we take a broad view of sustainability and whilst important, issues of sustainability in architecture do not end with environmental issues.
Our approach to sustainability is based on three core principles - Economic & Operational, Societal Factors and Environment & Resources - which have been distilled from our experience in environmental, sustainable and regeneration projects. A copy of our Environmental and Sustainability Policy is available on request.
The management and operation of our own studio is run in accordance with these principles, including waste minimisation, recycling, purchasing of sustainable products, energy supply, green transport policies and the creation of a healthy staff environment and culture.
A dedicated in-house team collects and disseminates information on all the above issues to ensure we continue to explore design solutions and remain at the forefront of our industry.
We direct and manage expertise in all areas of sustainable design to ensure that our buildings make a positive impact on the environment they are built in and on the communities they serve.
